Socialization is a lifelong process where we learn 

attitudes, values and behaviours. It is an interaction between heredity and environment. 

The cases of extreme childhood isolation demonstrate the importance of earliest socialization experiences for children.

WE SOCIALIZE WITH OTHER PEOPLE THROUGH OURSELVES!!! BUT WHAT IS 'SELF'??🙇

'Self' is a distinct identity that sets us apart from others. 

Cooley's 'looking glass self' explains that we learn who we are by interacting with others. The self is the product of our social interactions with other people.

HOW 'SELF' IS FORMED???😲

Self-idenity is formed in 3 ways, 

* Imagining how others see us,

* Imagining how others evaluate us and 

* Defining ourself as a result of these impressions.

Mead's core components of self, The I ( acting self that acts), The me,(socialized self that plans actions and judges performances).

 BUT WE HAVE OTHER PEOPLE IN OUR LIVES TOO!!!👫👫

Significant others,Individuals who are most important in the development of self.

Generalized other, attitudes, viewpoints and expectations of society that are taken into account in altering behaviour.

3 Stages of self development, 

* Perparatory, children imitate people around them.

* Play, children pretend to be other people.

* Game, children grasp their own social positions and those of others around them.

Goffman's presentation of the self, 

 * Dramaturgical approach, studies interaction as actors on stage.

 * Impression management, altering presentation of self.

 * Face-work, efforts people make to maintain a proper image and avoid public embarrasment.

According to freud, self is a social product and aspects of one's personality are influenced by other people.

* Peer groups, as children grow older, peer groups increasingly assume the role of significant others.

* Mass media and technology, television, internet and cellphone.

* The workplace, learning to behave appropriately within an occupation of human socialization.

* Religion & state, government and organized religion have assumed more of  a care giving role, previously performed by families.
